Microsoft is switching to annual currency-based price updates: what is changing and what isn't?

On July 8, 2026, Microsoft announced that currency-based price adjustments for Commercial Cloud services will henceforth take place once a year, specifically on January 1. For organizations using CSP (Cloud Solution Provider) or NCE (New Commerce Experience), this means greater budget predictability, though it is no reason to become complacent; product-specific price changes will continue to occur independently of this cycle.

What exactly is Microsoft announcing?

Starting with the fiscal year that began on July 1, 2026, Microsoft is implementing a fixed annual cycle for local-currency price updates for Commercial Cloud services. The next adjustment takes effect on January 1, 2027, and will recur annually on that same date, barring exceptional circumstances. Microsoft announces the direction of the update each November prior to the relevant year, allowing organizations time to prepare their budgets.

It is important to note that this applies exclusively to price adjustments resulting from exchange rate fluctuations between the local currency and the US dollar. According to Microsoft, product-specific price changes and adjustments to consumer prices continue to be communicated separately and fall outside this annual cycle.

Why this change matters

To understand why this is relevant, it helps to look at how things used to work. Since the introduction of a global USD price list in 2023, Microsoft has essentially revised local-currency prices twice a year based on exchange rates—without a fixed calendar date. In practice, this resulted in an unpredictable schedule. For instance, in late 2025, Microsoft announced a correction that lowered billing for certain Commercial Cloud services by 7.4 percent effective February 1, 2026, offsetting an earlier increase from 2024. For SAM and finance teams, this meant recalculating, rebudgeting, and renegotiating outside the regular renewal cycle.

A fixed annual date with a notification in November changes that. Organizations will now know when a currency-driven adjustment is coming and can factor this into their annual planning, rather than being caught off guard by an interim correction during the year.

What is this not?

The announcement explicitly does not cover "all" Microsoft price changes—which will henceforth take place once a year. Product-specific price hikes—such as the increases for various Microsoft 365 subscriptions that took effect on July 1, 2026, rising by as much as 33 percent in some cases—will continue to follow a separate communication track, independent of the currency cycle. The same applies to consumer price adjustments. Consequently, anyone assuming that the pricing picture for the entire year is now set following the November announcement is still missing a piece of the puzzle.

What does this mean for your organization?

Greater predictability in the currency component is a benefit, but it is no reason to put license management on autopilot. Here are a few things to do right now:

  • Make a habit of tracking the November announcement. Incorporate the annual notification into your budgeting cycle so that the currency impact on CSP or NCE contracts no longer comes as a surprise.
  • Keep a separate eye on product-specific announcements. These follow their own timelines and may occur independently of the January update.
  • Leverage this new predictability to uncover underlying inefficiencies. Licensing environments often expand unnoticed alongside the organization. A fixed annual review point is an ideal time to reassess your Effective License Position (ELP) and identify overcapacity or underutilization.

Have your license position assessed.

More predictable pricing is no substitute for active license management.
